Burden of undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension and its associated factors among rural populations in South Andaman Islands, India

Background: Elevated BP is an important risk factor of cardiovascular diseases; undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension a dangerous situation where target organ damage can occur leading morbidity mortality in apparently healthy individuals. Therefore, with aim to study the burden hypertension, this cross sectional design undertaken rural areas South Andaman Islands. Methods: A community based study. total 405 participants (Men: 175, Women: 230) were involved, mean age 48.36±15.16 years 50.69±16.01 years, 46.58±14.26 years). Results: 30.4% reported that they are known hypertensives, out them only 63.41% on regular treatment. 17.8% first time diagnosed during Overall, 48.1% having (known hypertensives±newly hypertensives), 63.20% know their status hypertension. large proportion Pre-hypertension (52.04%). Conclusions: Almost half population nearly 1/3rd do not have hypertension; among those who status, 2/3rd treatment; pre-hypertension. We need undertake rigorous efforts unmask, diagnose treat community.
